Neck or back pain may involve muscles, joints, discs or nerves. The purpose of this page is not to assign a diagnosis online, but to organize the clinical information and clarify which next step may be reasonable.
When a spine assessment may be useful
Persistent or recurrent pain
Neck, mid-back or lower-back pain is no longer temporary, limits sleep, work or daily activity, or keeps returning.
Symptoms into an arm or leg
Pain, tingling, numbness or an electric sensation travels from the neck or back into an extremity.
Weakness or loss of dexterity
You notice changes in walking, lifting the foot, gripping objects, using the hand or performing movements that were previously normal.
Imaging or a prior recommendation
You already have X-rays, a CT scan or MRI and need to understand whether the findings match the symptoms or request a second opinion.
The symptom pattern helps define the pathway
Localized neck or lower-back pain
The pain stays mainly in the neck or lower back. It may involve several structures and does not by itself confirm nerve compression.
Radiating pain
Pain travels into an arm or leg. When it runs from the buttock down the leg, review the sciatica assessment page.
Herniated disc finding
A disc herniation on MRI must be compared with symptoms and examination. Review the herniated disc assessment page.
Pain after trauma
A fall or accident may require an acute injury pathway. Also review fracture care and seek immediate help when warning signs are present.
What is reviewed during the assessment
The visit combines information that cannot be resolved from a photograph or imaging report alone:
- Onset, location and behavior of the pain.
- Radiation, tingling, numbness or weakness.
- Strength, sensation, reflexes, walking and mobility when relevant.
- Previous treatment and response.
- Available X-rays, MRI, CT scans or other studies.
- Whether imaging findings match the clinical pattern.
- Activity level, medical history and functional goals.
Possible paths that may be discussed
Non-surgical care and follow-up
Depending on the case, the plan may continue with activity changes, rehabilitation and clinical follow-up. The recommendation is individualized after assessment.
Additional studies
Not every patient needs the same imaging. A study is considered when it may change the interpretation of the problem or the next decision.
More advanced assessment
This may be appropriate when there is neurological deficit, significant persistent limitation, progression or clinical findings that require a more complex review.
Second opinion
A second opinion can clarify the reasoning behind a previous recommendation and its benefits, limitations, alternatives and unresolved questions.
Specific spine procedures are not presented as an offered service on this page until the applicable clinical scope has been confirmed.
Warning signs that require immediate medical care
How to prepare for the consultation
- Available imaging in digital or physical format.
- Medical reports, previous notes and recommendations.
- Medication list and treatments already tried.
- Date of onset and progression of symptoms.
- Where the pain is located or where it travels.
- Activities, positions or movements that change the symptoms.
- Changes in strength, sensation, balance or function.
There is no need to repeat imaging solely because of this page. The value of a new study depends on the assessment.
Cost and location
Cost depends on the type of consultation, imaging review and follow-up needs. Any additional estimate is defined after assessment; insurance agreements, direct billing or coverage are not assumed.
Scheduled consultations take place at Hospital Punta Mita in Corral del Risco. The page serves patients from Riviera Nayarit, Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta without presenting those areas as additional offices.

View TreatmentFrequently asked questions
Does every spine problem require surgery?
No. Many conditions may continue with non-surgical care and follow-up. The need for a surgical assessment depends on symptoms, examination, progress and imaging rather than on one scan alone.
Do I need an MRI before the visit?
Not necessarily. Bring any MRI, CT scan or X-rays you already have. If no imaging is available, the assessment can determine which study may add useful information based on the symptoms and examination.
What is the difference between back pain, sciatica and a herniated disc?
Back pain may remain in the neck or lower back. Sciatica describes pain that travels down the leg. A herniated disc is a structural finding that may or may not explain the symptoms.
When should I seek urgent care?
Seek immediate medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the genital or perineal area, marked or progressive weakness, sudden difficulty walking or severe pain after trauma.
Can I request a second opinion on my imaging?
Yes. The visit can review symptoms, examination, images and the prior recommendation to clarify the reasoning and remaining questions. A second opinion does not guarantee that the recommendation will change.
What should I bring?
Bring available imaging, medical reports, a medication list, previous treatments and a short timeline of when the symptoms began, where they are located and what makes them better or worse.
Where does the consultation take place?
Scheduled consultations take place at Hospital Punta Mita in Corral del Risco. Patients from Riviera Nayarit, Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta are seen without presenting those areas as additional offices.
